Election notice 1890
This notice was issued in 1890 by the Burgh of Kirkintilloch to male and female voters. Some women were able allowed to vote in local burgh elections at this time. But to qualify for a vote they had to occupy land or buildings above a certain value, and be the head of their own household. So in practice only a very small number of women were eligible.
Our Equalities group members noted the connection between voting rights and wealth.
Women were still not allowed to vote in parliamentary elections until 1918 (if over 30) and 1928 if over 21).
