The Municipality of Lazise is the first free Municipality in Italy.
Lake Garda has always represented a natural border, as well as a political line of division between those who governed the Veneto and the Lombard territories.
The autonomy claims of the population of Lazise date back as far as the Holy Roman Empire: in fact in 983 the community asked Emperor Otto II to be able to enjoy very broad legal and fiscal autonomy. The Emperor, who wanted to maintain good relations with the population and exploit the territorial conformations for the defense of the troops, granted the requested autonomy. For this reason, the municipality of Lazise sul Garda is considered the first free municipality in Italy.
Since then many governments have followed one another: the Scaligeri, the Visconti, the Serenissima Republic of Venice and then again the Gonzaga, Napoleon, the Lombardo Veneto and finally, after the third war of independence of 1866, definitively the Kingdom of Italy.
Il Comune di Lazise è il primo Comune libero d’Italia.
Il Lago di Garda ha da sempre rappresentato un confine naturale, oltre che linea politica di divisione tra chi governava il Veneto e i territori lombardi.
Le rivendicazioni autonomistiche della popolazione di Lazise risalgono addirittura al Sacro Romano Impero: infatti nel 983 la comunità chiese all’Imperatore Ottone II di poter godere di autonomie giuridiche e fiscali molto ampie. L’Imperatore, che volle mantenere buoni rapporti con la popolazione e sfruttare le conformazioni territoriali per la difesa delle truppe, concesse le autonomie richieste. Per questo motivo il comune di Lazise sul Garda viene considerato il primo Comune libero d’Italia.
Da allora si succedettero moltissimi governi: gli Scaligeri, i Visconti, la Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia e poi ancora i Gonzaga, Napoleone, il Lombardo Veneto e finalmente, dopo la terza guerra d’indipendenza del 1866, definitivamente il Regno d’Italia.
