Night Shift

After dark, a Norfolk Southern motor is sitting at Control Point Andorra on the point of a manifest bound for the yard around a mile down.

Earlier that day, I had caught up with a manifest bound for Roseville with an interesting set of power. Leading the way, an NS C40-9W in the road's old scheme. Trailing behind this, a BNSF GEVO and fresh UP ACM rebuild. Unfortunately, by the time I had found the manifest the lighting was absolutely horrible, and to top things off it would tie down at the furthest south siding on the line, Sunset Whitney. At the time, there was no way to know when there would be a crew to yard the train, but within a couple hours we had a time, but it was going to be after dark.

I headed down to the Roseville station to get a shot of the lead motor passing the Tower Theater, however, after awhile it never showed up. I knew they had departed Sunset Whitney some time earlier, which meant it could only be at one of two places, Control Point Andorra or Sierra. It was made clear very quick it was not at Sierra so I headed to Andorra to find the train sitting with a red signal ahead. Walking over to the head end, I proceeded to get a couple night shots of the lead motor before heading back to the station to wait. Unfortunately, it was getting late, and after awhile of waiting the train never showed. Not knowing when it was going to move again, I headed home, and it was still sitting at Andorra when I left.

With these older NS GEs becoming rarer and rarer as time passes, I decided to see what had happened to this unit since I took this photo in 2022. After being sent to Wabtec, it had become part of a C6M order that would never be delivered to Norfolk Southern, ending up at Ferromex as FXE 4917. Maybe one of these days I'll get a photo of the 9662 under its new owner, and new look.
