Wheatley Hill Colliery, opened in 1869 and was situated in the township of Wingate, was taken over, in 1885, by the Weardale Iron and Coal Company, Limited. The following seams are met : the Five Quarter and Main Coal (these seams are exhausted) ; Low Main, 3 feet 1 inch at the shaft, tapering to 1 foot 6 inches, at a depth of 148 fathoms ; Hutton, 3 feet 3 inches in thickness, 166 fathoms ; Harvey, 3 feet 10 inches, 190 fathoms ; and the Busty, 4 feet 2 inches, 195 fathoms. Output 350 tons per day, employing 170 men and boys. It closed in 1968.
