Wolfe Islander III Ferry, Kingston, Ontario, -22°C (-35°C with windshield factor)
I went out in the cold arctic wind early this morning looking for polar vortex features when temperature was -22°C (-35°C with wind chill factor). I was not disappointed by the wintry spectacle. The sun rose giving unusual textures to the steam ascending from the unfrozen Lake Ontario water but failed to raise the air temperature all day. The wind twisted the raising mist into towering steam devils. Most birds seemed to be relatively undeterred by the dramatic dip in temperature although some appeared to be reluctant to leave their shelters. The Wolfe Islander III ferry was gliding on the foggy lake water and will likely find itself running in a narrow open water channel tomorrow.
