Karl Brommann
German Kompanieführer SS-Untersturmführer Karl Brommann (centre of photo) and his crew of 1.kompanie, schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 503 posing in front of their Panzerkampfwagen Tiger II Ausführung B, "Königstiger" (Armoured-battle-car Tiger 2 Execution B, "Bengal Tiger"). (Danzig-area, East Prussia, March 1945).
On the Eastern Front in September 1944 Brommann was thrown into heavy fighting in the Stettin-area (now Szczecin, Poland) tasked with defending the German Army and refugees retreat from East Prussia. He was later transferred in February 1945 to the Danzig-area (now Gdansk, Poland), where he and his crew over the following month destroyed 72 enemy tanks, 44 artillery guns and 15 vehicles. In March 1945, Brommann was severely wounded by shrapnel requiring him to be evacuated to Swindemünde, East Prussia (now Świnoujście, Poland) earning him the 'Verwundetenabzeichen in Gold' (Wounded Badge in Gold) and for his performance near Danzig-Gotenhafen awarded the 'Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes' (Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross). Spending a month in hospital Brommann was released in late-April with Germany's surrender in May he was captured heading home to Neumünster by the British and later released in November 1947.
Pictured (above) with his crew, Brommann had been wounded in combat on the 2nd of March with burns to his hands and head despite this he decided to continue fighting. Later in March however he would be severely wounded by shell fragments to his head, right ear and right eye taking him out of the war. This photo was most likely taken early-March 1945 after his achievements near Danzig that were later reported in the 10th of April 1945 'Wehrmachtbericht', a printed newsletter and daily radio broadcast for the German public giving recognition to soldiers who excelled in combat actions.
