Kampfgruppe Peiper

Commanded by 'Obersturmbannführer' (Lieutenant colonel) Jochen Peiper, 'Kampfgruppe' (Battle-group) Peiper was given the objective to split the Americans and British then drive on to Antwerp with the hope of weakening the Allied forces in Belgium. The offensive was known as 'Wacht am Rhein' or the Battle of the Bulge. However Kampfgruppe Peiper's drive through Belgium was halted at the village of La Gleize. American forces of the 3rd Armored Division and the 82nd Airborne Division had dug-in and launched an aggressive counter-attack. Kampfgruppe Peiper was encircled by the Americans in the village and ground-down by heavy artillery fire. On Christmas Eve 1944, the remaining forces of Kampfgruppe Peiper, low on fuel and other supplies fled in the evening with the Americans discovering over 130 vehicles including Panthers and Königstigers abandoned in the village a few days later.
