Kettenkraftrad
American Engineers of 327th Engineer Combat Battalion, 102nd Infantry Division riding a captured German SonderKraftfahrzueg 2 (Special-Motor-vehicle 2) "Kleines Kettenkraftrad" (Small Tracked-motorcycle). (Besweiler, Germany, Jan 1945).
Designed by engineer and Reichskriegsministerium (Reich war ministry) official Heinrich Kniepkamp, the Kettenkraftrad was produced in 1938 to 1948 by NSU Werke AG of Neckarsulm, Germany as an all-terrain-vehicle intended for forestry workers. The vehicle however became popular in Wehrmacht service for its towing capacity and excellent cross-country ability. Used mostly for communications cable laying and in Luftwaffe service as an aircraft tug, the vehicle saw service mostly on the Eastern Front. Other units such as the Gebirgsjäger and Fallschirmjäger received the vehicle utilizing it for towing the 8,8cm Raketenwerfer 43 and Sonderanhänger 1 (Special [equipment] trailer). The vehicle continued to be produced after the war til 1948 for agriculture and forestry use.
