History: Bishop Jerónimo of Valencia! - A warrior Bishop, and companion of El Cid. When Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar conquered Valencia from the Moors single-handedly as the leader of his own personal army of loyal followers, Bishop Jerónimo was with him. Rodrigo, El Cid, granted the charter of endowment to Bishop Jerónimo and the cathedral church in that city in 1098. He wasn't just a loyal follower, pious counselor, and pastor of the Christians in Valencia, he was a fierce warrior, willing to sacrifice his life for the Reconquest, always requesting to be in the mounted vanguard of El Cid's army!
The Reconquista (Spanish and Portuguese for "reconquest") was a period in the history of the Iberian Peninsula of about 780 years between the Umayyad conquest of Hispania in 711, the expansion of the Christian kingdoms throughout Hispania, and the fall of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada in 1492.
The beginning of the Reconquista is traditionally marked with the Battle of Covadonga (718 or 722), the first known victory in Hispania by Christian military forces since the 711 military invasion undertaken by combined Arab-Berber forces.
