I used the Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G on my Nikon D330.The DoF equation is (2CNU^2)/(f^2). I set up the 'N' value to be 5.3 and 'f' to be 55. The camera was 500mm from the subject which is the 'U' value. According to the internet the circle of confusion for my camera is 0.020mm.
Plugging in the numbers we get the equation (2)(0.02)(5.3)(500^2)/{55^2} which gives me 17.52mm but since it's at a 45 degree angle we must multiply our DoF by sqrt(2) which gives us 24.77.
Looking at the image the sharpness ranges from the 13cm to 15cm which equals roughly 20mm which is pretty close to our calculations.
