Marking of 17 May. 17 May is Norway's Constitution Day and is celebrated as National Day; both designations are used during the day. The day has been celebrated since the 1820s, and from 1823 the date was referred to in the newspapers as "Constitution Day". The first official celebration was in 1827. The day was celebrated in full after the death of King Karl Johan in 1844. It is stipulated in the law of 26 April 1947 that 1 and 17 May are national public holidays.
