Rooted
Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia: At the Port Douglas Sunday Market, I saw this young man playing on the roots of a giant fig tree while his parents socialized. I was struck by the image of him on this expansive bed of roots, and thought about surreptitiously photographing him — but being children and not in my own country, I thought better of it and walked by. But I still really liked the image, so I went back, introduced myself to his parents, and asked permission to photograph him. They readily agreed, got their son's attention, and told him to pose for me — which was _not_ what I wanted! Nonetheless, I still like the sight of a child lost amidst a tangle of tree roots.
