Markarian's Chain
Markarian’s Chain, a group of galaxies stretched out in a curved line, is in the constellation of Virgo and is a part of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies which itself contains about 2000 galaxies. The member galaxies of Markarian’s Chain are about 55 million light years away so the light we are seeing now left them just 10 million years after the extinction of the dinosaurs. The main galaxy in the bottom left of the image is M87 where the central supermassive black hole whose event horizon was directly imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope in 2019. The top two brightest galaxies are M84 and M86 which are also Messier objects.
