Preventing Retail Crime in Leeds
Retail crime has always been a pressing matter in Leeds but with the outbreak of the Coronavirus it has become more and more important to stay in control of everything that happens within a retail store.
By the end of June 2020 more retailers had gone into administration, putting more stores at risk and more employees under threat of losing their jobs, than in the whole of 2019. By early October 2020, there were more stores at risk and staff facing redundancy than at the height of the 2007-9 recession. Within Leeds shops including Monsoons, Bensons for Beds, Harveys and more have been closed. This coupled with the expected increase of losses within retail from crime, which was at £4,821m in 2019, shows the importance of taking effective preventative measures. Before looking at prevention it is important to first understand what types of retail crime are occurring.

Shoplifting
There were a total 157 shoplifting offences recorded in Leeds in August 2020 alone. Shoplifting is one of the most popular crimes committed within retail and within Leeds as a whole.
