950 - VHL950
Again, there is nothing in today’s Guy Wulfrunian photograph still exists today. Sadly, it is still fresh in the author’s mind, particularly the Specialloid Piston manufacturer’s premises, where an unidentified Wulf is passing. Opposite Specialloid, there was a café called the Popular Café in the middle of a terrace of assorted shops.
The only clue in the photograph is the sign for Goodman Street which places 950 (VHL950) directly beneath the 1990s-built flyover on Hunslet Low Road.
Amongst the otherwise all-British-built vehicles is a solitary Volkswagen van just in front of an Austin A40 Farina. Notice that the street lights are carried on former tramway traction poles
The area underwent massive change in the mid-1960s when the dual carriageway was built as far as the junction with South Accommodation Road. Goodman Street was blocked off before its junction with Hunslet Low Road with access to it made via Donisthorpe Street, now the site of the new First West Yorkshire bus depot.
Strangely, a new free standing Popular Café was built in the 1960s scheme and this building survives to this day as Ben’s café.
