Much like comedy, a meteor impact is ALL about timing. This self-proclaimed "best-preserved impact crater in the world" boasts an impressive size. I was astonished by how big it actually is. This change was certainly abrupt. With the meteor flying through the sky and striking earth in a matter of seconds and at astounding speeds. Ultimately, less than 1% of the meteor that entered the atmosphere struct the planet. Despite losing 99% of its mass, the impact was still THIS big. What is most surprising, is the corresponding long term influence time has had on this area. Despite the catastrophic event, life exists and flourishes. Many desert creatures run around, they are visible with the handy telescopes provided by the park. And there is a litany of desert flora present. I guess I expected to see a smoking ruin, not a peaceful cradle of life. Time has a funny way of healing these sorts of wounds. The Arizona that experienced this collision was MUCH different than what we expect today. It was the ice age when this meteor struck.
