WILD BURROS
Spanish missionaries brought burros to the Desert Southwest in the 1500s, and they have been in Arizona since 1679. Burros were essential for the exploration and settlement of the West, serving as pack animals during the Gold Rush of the 1800s.
The burros found in Homolovi Ruins State Park are considered "wild burros" as they roam freely within the park boundaries and are part of a managed wild burro population, not domesticated animals.
