Narcissus

The daffodil is a genus of plants that most likely originated in Southern Europe (possibly the Iberian Peninsula) and surrounding areas (including Northern Africa). They may also have been native to western parts of Asia or further north in Europe, however, plants of that genus have been cultivated and escaped cultivation for a long time, so that it can be difficult to say which are native and which naturalised. Additionally, most species of the genus have very limited ranges, which, however, tend to overlap and then produce hybrids of both species. Different species of the genus have been cultivated for such a long time, that we find images in an ancient Egyptian, poetry about daffodils in ancient Greek and Islamic texts and the use of daffodils in Chinese gardens. Today, the Netherlands are the origin of the majority of commercially available daffodil bulbs.
