Soldiers Executed in WW1 including Murderers
Although 3000 soldiers were sentenced to death the majority were reprieved to periods in prison. A total of 346 were shot for various reasons, including 37 murderers. When a few years ago the government after bowing to pressure from the families of the dead and special interest groups declared a blanket pardon for 309 of the soldiers. The 37 murderers are NOT pardoned.
The photo is of St Marie Cemetery in Le Havre which contains the grave of Lance Sergeant Wickings convicted of the following offence:-
Aged 28 he murdered a prostitute in Le Havre in 1918 because he did not want to pay for her services. He was tried and found guilty then shot on the 7th March 1918 at Le Havre, He is now buried in St Marie Cemetery in Le Havre with no indication either on his headstone or in the CWGC Debt of Honour Register that he was a murdereras are all the rest of the 37.

The public who visit the war cemeteries in their thousands will be totally ignorant of the murderers in the same graves as all those who gave their lives for the country in WW1
Compare this with the British sailors on the Bristol merchant ship Kansas City where the three Royal Marine soldiers lost on the ship are commemorated but the crew are totally ignored as though they never existed. In my opinion you should never rewrite history however unpleasant it may appear and this case proves it.
