STAITHES, NORTH YORKSHIRE 23/5/2025

The north west abutment of the former Staithes viaduct pictured on Friday 23/5/2025. Opened in 1883 the viaduct, constructed from iron in a similar manner to other structures on the Whitby to Loftus line, was demolished in 1960 after the line closed in 1958. The viaduct famously had a anemometer connected to the nearest signal box, to inform signalmen the strength of the wind at the exposed site, as to whether it was safe for trains to cross or not!!
