'tini toast 365 Days (Year 5) #046 12/16

A few weeks ago I was in the Pitt book store and was talking with a friend. We were trying to think of the most famous nurses in history. We were only able to come up with two. Here are a few of the rest:

Florence Nightingale- The George Washington of nurses, she started it all.

Clara Barton- She put the red in the Red Cross.

Mary Todd Lincoln- Abe's better half and a Civil War combat nurse.

Walt Whitman- When he wasn't writing poetry he was tending to the wounded.

Edith Cavell- Got shot for aiding the wounded in WWI, whatever side they were on.

Margaret Sanger- Founded Planned Parenthood and fought for women when no-one else would.

Hazel W. Johnson-Brown- First African-American woman general in history, and a nurse.

Dorothea Dix- Championed the mentally ill.

...and some fun ones...

Nurse Ratched- Hated Jack Nicholson in the Coo-coo's Nest but with cause.

"Hotlips" Houlihan- Head nurse on MASH and probably the most famous fictitious nurse.

Colleen McMurphy- Combat nurse, China Beach.

Christine Chapel- Patched up Captain Kirk more than a few times.

Edith Shain- She's the nurse getting kissed by the sailor in Times Square.

Helen Rosenthal- Am I the only one who remembers St. Elsewhere?

Carol Hathaway- George Clooney's main squeeze on ER.

...oh, and one more...

Congratulations Nurse Carrie on graduating and going from a student to a medical professional!

This Martini toast goes out to YOU!

Prost!
