"In Bed" 365 Days (Year 2) #92 01/31

(Today's news)

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Despite it being a showdown between the remaining two candidates (In Bed), Thursday's Democratic debate was in marked contrast from last week's contentious face off.

Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton struck a mostly cordial tone during the debate (In Bed).

Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were debating for the last time (In Bed) before the Super Tuesday contests next week.

Both candidates focused on differences between themselves (In Bed)and Republicans more than differences between each other.

They did try to point out distinctions between their policies, but they did it without as much finger-pointing (In Bed)as last week's debate.

Perhaps the biggest difference in their platforms (In Bed) is their stance on health care.

"I believe absolutely, passionately that we must have universal health care (In Bed). It is a moral responsibility and a right for our country," Clinton said, adding that her plan is similar to that of former Sen. John Edwards, who dropped out of the race Wednesday.

His name came up frequently, as both candidates were fighting to pick up his supporters (In Bed).

"It is true we've got a policy difference," Obama said. "What [people are] struggling with (In Bed)is they can't afford the health care, and so I emphasize reducing costs. My belief is that if we make it affordable(In Bed), if we provide subsidies to those who can't afford it(In Bed), they will buy it."

Thursday's event is the first debate without Edwards (In Bed).

Edwards had campaigned on the message that he was standing up for the little guy (In Bed), the people who are not traditionally given a voice in Washington, and that he would do more to fight special interests.

Obama said he thinks it's very important to reduce the influence of lobbyists (In Bed) and special interests in Washington, implying that Clinton does not.

"I think that a lot of issues that both Sen. Clinton and I care about will not move forward (In Bed) unless we have increased the kinds of ethics proposal that I passed just last year -- some of the toughest since Watergate -- and that's something that John Edwards and I both talked about (In Bed) repeatedly in this campaign," he said.

"That's why I don't take federal PAC and federal lobbyist money .(In Bed) That is a difference," he said.

Obama got laughs (In Bed) when asked about how he might counter Republican charges against "tax-and-spend liberal Democrats."

"Well, first of all, I don't think the Republicans are going to be in a real strong position (In Bed) to argue fiscal responsibility, when they have added $4 trillion or $5 trillion worth of national debt. I am happy to have that argument," he said.

Clinton drew cheers when she responded to the question about how a Clinton could promote change (In Bed) after decades of a Clinton or Bush in power.

"It did take a Clinton to clean up (In Bed) after the first Bush, and I think it might take another one (In Bed) to clean up after the second Bush," she said....
