This photo captures one of the largest ruminants in the United States. It is the American Bison (Bison bison). I took this photo on March 17, 2020 on Antelope Island in Syracuse, Utah. American Bison were first introduced to the state park in 1893 by some Utah pioneers. Twelve bison were introduced to the park at that time; four bulls, four cows and four calves. They reproduced at an exponential rate and they are now famous for being one of the largest bison herds in the nation with a population size that fluctuates between 550-700 individuals. American Bison play a significant role at Antelope Island. The bison on the island don't have any predators and have little competition which allows them to have long lifespans and reproduce at a very quick rate. This specific park is a wide open grassland, the ideal habitat for bison. The bison are a key species because they help maintain the fields there by feeding. This causes the park to be a habitable environment for many species.
