Overcome opening sequence

“Overcome” was a media project where my class had to create short documentaries with emphasis on resilience as a theme. We used this brief to create a documentary that attempts to shine a light on undiagnosed depression in students, and how to overcome the feelings through resilience. These themes were explored through interviews with a group member, Theo, whose father had passed away earlier that year. Each of us were to create the film independently in two minute increments with me bearing the reins of the first two minutes. I used editing techniques to isolate the interviewees using shrinking frames whilst simultaneously making them seem overwhelmed by introducing other interviewees around them in their own frames. Furthermore the mise-en-scene is kept consistent in these interviews to highlight the scale of the issue. This highly edited piece was inspired by the works of Asif Kapadia who often uses heavy editing over ordinary footage. Given the chance to do the project again, I would focus more on balancing the footage ISO as the footage came out rather grainy. This project had an emphasis on pre-production and thus I have included my processes.
