'A Well Earned Rest'

Back in time again to 16.25pm on Saturday 4th June 2022, day two of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway's (GWR) 2022 Cotswold Festival of Steam: 'Somerset and Dorset Remembered', sees BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 No. 92203 Black Prince pausing between duties in the locomotive stabling yard at Toddington. Here it would remain until 18.45pm before taking the return Evening Dining Train to Cheltenham Racecourse.

It had just uncoupled in Toddington Station from, another equally respendent guest engine, Southern Region Bulleid Light Pacific West Country Class 7P5F 4-6-2 No. 34028 Eddystone after piloting the 16.00pm 'Double Headed' departure from Broadway.

Shortly after taking this shot 34028 continued with 'Aplomb'.

Black Prince's working day began at 9.05am when heading the day's first passenger service from Toddington for Cheltenham Racecourse.

Because of COVID 19 this 'Commemorative Event' was postponed from 2020.

92203 was designed by Robert Riddles and built at Swindon Works in 1959. It only lasted 8 years in service, because of ongoing dieselisation and electrification to the UK's mainline network, before its withdrawal in November 1967; when it was purchased straight from BR by the artist David Shepherd who named her 'Black Prince' - a name never carried in BR service.

It was then moved to the Longmoor Military Railway until its closure, whereupon between 1973 and 1998 it was based on the East Somerset Railway - thereafter spending many years at the GWR before moving to the North Norfolk Railway (NNR) in 2011. In 2015, David Shepherd sold it to the NNR after nearly 50 years of private ownership.

This 'Iconic' locomotive was one of the five guest engines appearing at GWR's Steam Festival held between Friday 3rd and Sunday 5th June 2022.

Quite a spectacle and revered by the many nearby photographers too! It was also the first time I'd seen it running in preservation. I last saw it at GWR in May 2010, when attending an earlier gala, but sadly it was then out of steam.
