Hanham is situated roughly half way between Bristol and Bath on the B4321. This is an old Roman road used for travelling between the Roman port (Portus Abonae) at Sea Mills and Bath. The weir powered several mills in the area and the lock opened in 1727, thus improving the passage of coal and quarry stone along the River Avon in the Bath direction.
See British Listed buildings: 1-4 Hanham Mills road are Grade II listed buildings from C17 or early C18 cottages (Nos 1 and 2 particularly), altered in the C19 and modernised. All four houses are connected with Hanham Mill and probably with the Avon Navigation Scheme (1720s).
