Nambung National Park is located in Western Australia - some 200 km north of Perth. Hundreds of limestone pillars up to 3.5m tall, scatter the desert landscape. The low amount of light pollution makes it a fantastic location for star gazing. Nambung National Park is situated in the Yued Noongar country of the First Nations people of Australia and has significant cultural heritage. Nambung is derived from the Noongar name for crooked or winding.
I planned to go to capture a setting crescent moon with cloud movement in the sky with a Milky Way panorama. Often people hear the words cloud, moon and milky way and say "naaaaaahh", but I love those conditions. It does however limit the photography that I can do. The MW core ideally is separated sufficiently from a crescent moon (this time was 23% luminous at the time of photographing). After scouting and identifying a few locations that appealed to me, I decided I wanted to photograph at 30mm rather than the frequency used ultrawide 15mm to give additional detail and also for some lens compression with the elements. When I started photographing the foreground, the clouds appeared to be distant near the horizon, but they rolled in with incredible speed. So when I started on the rows that included the sky - considered starting again at 15mm, but I more or less stuck to the original plan. However rather doing it in strict row by row, ended up going a bit squiggly to ensure I captured the MW core before it got engulfed by clouds. The right side was comparatively clearer, so photographed that last. I managed to photograph the scene, but wasn't sure if I had captured it in time - re-photographed the scene just in case, but most of it was just cloudy. Within a few minutes of picking up the other timelapse camera and getting back to the car it started raining. I did take a couple more photos of the horizon to see what the cloud looked like - and it was pretty heavy. However it was moving so fast that within the half hour of leaving the park it cleared again.
