A truly sappy image - gem covered tree trunk

I am not sure why this and another nearby tree was exuding so much sap from under its bark. I saw a very dark trunk that was glittering and found this upon investigation up close. This was happening up as far as I could see. Sap is supposed to run up, not out of, the trees at this time of year.
