1518 (ca.), Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino), Studies for an Angel and the Virgin -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

This sheet in red chalk may relate to an altarpiece for the Clarisse nuns of Monteluce, originally commissioned in 1505 from Raphael, but ultimately completed much later by his assistants, Giulio Romano and Giovan Francesco Penni. Here, the woman at lower right crosses her hands on her chest in a gesture of humility. Her pose resembles that of the Virgin in the final altarpiece, but in mirror image. The young man with his arm extended at left may have been an initial thought for the garland-bearing angels in the upper part of the painting.
