1504 (ca.), Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino), The Virgin and Child in a Landscape (The Madonna of the Pomegranate) -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)
From the exhibition label: In this large drawing, Raphael experimented with the infant's elegant contrapposto pose and the foreshortening of the legs, arms, hands, pillow, and book. The relatively finished composition also bears traces of framing outlines drawn in black chalk, evidence that it may have been a demonstration piece used to show off the young artist's understanding of anatomical perspective.
