1380 (ca.), Niccolò di Buonaccorso, The Marriage of the Virgin -- National Gallery (London)
From the exhibition label: The Virgin Mary was promised in marriage to the man whose wooden rod flowered at the Temple. Joseph is the successful suitor. Here, his bare feet tread on the visible weft of an Anatolian carpet, imagined with a rather simple design featuring birds and large animals. Sienese painters continued to represent carpets with similar decoration for 150 years. This may reflect the development of a local production of modestly priced carpets adopting Anatolian-style designs.
