1892, Winslow Homer, Canoeing in the Adirondacks [watercolor] -- Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond)

From the museum label: Beginning in 1886, Winslow Homer began painting the activities of the North Woods Club, a hunting and fishing preserve on Mink Pond in the Adirondack Mountains. This watercolor belongs to a series produced in the summer and fall of 1891 and 1892 that features the distinctive figures of Homer's two guides, the bearded Rufus Wallace and the much younger Michael Francis Flynn. Homer was one of the first American painters to adopt watercolor as a form of fine art; the medium had traditionally been used only for sketches and atmospheric studies. His technique alternates between precise detailing and areas of wash. Typical of Homer's watercolors, a quiet solemnity pervades the painting, evoking the deep relation between man and nature.
