1477, Ercole de Roberti, Ginevra Bentivoglio -- National Gallery of Art (Washington)
From the museum label:
These portraits are intended to express power and authority. The couple were well-known political figures in Italy. Giovanni governed Bologna from 1462 to 1506, and Ginevra came from a ruling family in Milan. The profile format was typical for court portraits at the time.
Husband and wife face each other, staring ahead.
They are meant to seem remote, with no hint of their personalities. Instead, the artist focuses on their luxurious dress and other details. Ginevra's veil is stiff and bunched, her blonde hair forming a perfect pattern over her pale skin. The dark gemstones along her sleeve are a sign of wealth and status.
