The letters VOC feature prominently on the ship 'Amsterdam.' Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (Dutch East India Company) was founded in 1602 with a 21-year monopoly to undertake trade between Holland and the East. It's regarded as the world's first international company and the very first joint-stock company (company that issues stock). VOC was a powerful company, possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, imprison and execute convicts, negotiate treaties, coin money, and establish colonies
The original Dutch East Indiaman 'Amsterdam' sailed its maiden voyage on 1749-01-08, but the unlucky ship sank merely 18 days later along the coast of England during a bad storm. This Amsterdam seen here is a full-size replica completed in 1990.
I had come to 'Amsterdam' during my first visit to the Netherlands in 2010, with the intention of boarding the ship. Strangely and stupidly, I changed my mind thinking that "this thing looks very tacky and childish." After my return to Canada, I regretted over the decision and said to myself that "if I ever return to Amsterdam, I'll pay 'Amsterdam' a proper visit, which is why I was here this time.
