This is a volcanic landscape, high on the spine of Java. The road ascends/descends Tangkuban Perahu which is active. As one climbs from the tropical lowlands with its rice padis, the crops change to grapes, then to lettuce and tea, higher up to cabbages, to strawberries and to apples and stone fruit. Higher still are the heaths among which the shepherd herd their small flocks.
Away from Indonesia, people do not think of such crops being a vital part of the economy. But the fertile soils and humid conditions and constant lower temperatures support intensive agriculture and a network of vibrant market villages and cities.
Tangkuban Perahu is a stratovolcano and its rim with a view into the crater is accessible to tourists. Visitors can see sulfurous steam, hot springs, and bubbling mud. While you can drive up to the rim, and there are many souvenier sellers, and food stalls along the rim road, recent eruptions have led to the closure of some, whilst there is a need for guides if walking the high trails.
