A meeting of Bitterns.
During an April evening walk at the RSPB reserve at Minsmere we could hear the distant booming of bitterns, and as we approached the Island Mere Hide it became apparent that there was at least one male fairly close. We entered the hide and there it was a boomer about 100M away to the right hand side of the clearing in front of the hide. After several minutes watching we then spotted a female stretching her neck up from the reeds listening intently. Gradually the two birds came closer together until eventually they met and displayed. This carried on for about a minute and then both birds flew off together over the mere. A wonderful sight to end a great day at Minsmere.
As this all occurred at around 8:15pm light levels were very low. These images were taken with a Canon zoom lens at 400mm with IS on. ISO set at 1600 with a shutter speed on 1/160 sec. without tripod.
