Marcell Jansen joined Borussia Mönchengladbach as a 9-year-old and spent 14 seasons with the five-time Bundesliga champions, only for the hometown boy’s progress to outpace that of the club. With Borussia forced to accept relegation to the second division at the end of the 2006-7 campaign, Janssen opted for a switch to Bayern, where the dynamic youngster has been welcomed with open arms. “He definitely makes us stronger,” commented coach Ottmar Hitzfeld. The versatile Germany regular, a high-stamina, hard-tackling player equally at home on the left side of defence or midfield, has impressed Uli Hoeneß too: “He’s confident, optimistic and raring to go.”
