Dead Soldiers in the Wheatfield Near the Emmittsburg Road
This photo portrays the largest amount of casualties in one place. I believe this photo is the most significant in this collection due to the fact that this is taking place after a battle has been waged, and after the bodies have been collected. One can determine this due to the fact that there is a coroner's wagon sitting in the background. However, the way the bodies are positioned is outstanding. Only about six or seven bodies are in the foreground, with the closest one's face being carefully hidden by the rock. In the far background, we can see what looks like another line of soldiers, but it does not appear to be a large amount of them. This photo gives the viewer the impression that a large battle has just taken place, and the bodies are being collected for burial. However, there are only about 20 or so men in the entire photo, and the way the photo is taken, it suggests that there were only 20 or so casualties. The line of dead soldiers in the back is seen as unimportant or insignificant, due to the angle of the photo. However, that line most likely went on for 20 to 30 times what is shown in the photo. Another interesting fact is that there are no living soldiers in the photo. The coroner's are there to pick them up, and have already collected the bodies together in rows, however they are not shown. By doing this, it further creates the sense that these men are simply the cost of victory, and their bodies will be buried, whenever there is time.
