Bryant and May Match Factory

Fairfield Road, Bow. The factory opened in 1860 and was extended for warehousing and offices in 1872. In 1888 it was the scene of the famous Match Girls strike led by Annie Besant. This large-scale extension, designed by Holman and Goodrham, followed in 1909-1911 to accommodate continuous matchmaking machines. The factory closed in 1979 and from 1987 was converted to flats as the "Bow Quarter" development.
