St Elli Parish Church, Llanelly Hill, Abergavenny 19 October 2012
Books can represent faith, learning to read and write, a scholar; a prayer, or knowledge or even memory (where it has a dog-eared page). It may represent the Book of Life and is often shown as a bible. The urn symbolises the repository of the soul. Yet more young deaths. The J Jones, Brynmawr, on the urn's pedestal is possibly the stone mason. Double panelled stones were popular in the 18th Century, continuing into the 19th.
"Long nights and days I bore great pain
I cried for help but all in vain,
Till God above who thought it best,
To give me ease and let me rest".
St Elli's (Ellyw) was built 1175-1250, but a north aisle was added in 1626, possibly as a result of new wealth brought in by the opening of the Clydach Iron Works.
