A particularly finely executed dove descending to Earth with a sprig of olive in its beak. The dove represents the Holy Spirit, and is usually show ascending to, or descending from, Heaven; when it carries an olive branch, this is a symbol of hope or promise. Ivy, which the real ivy has reached, symbolises memory, immortality, friendship, fidelity, faithfulness, undying affection, eternal life.
Christchurch was consecrated in 1860, built to alleviate the difficulties in crossing the River Usk to St Peter's for members of the Llanwenarth Parish. Included within the parish of the new church were the industrial hamlets of Pwll Du and Garnddyrys on the Blorenge Mountain.
