The Red Arrows, loved by the British public and senior officers, need no introduction. Their popularity amongst their peers is much less assured, being regarded as a "bunch of prima donnas", and frequently irreverently referred to as "The Dead Sparrows". Matters are not helped by Tannoy announcements such as "Anyone with a car in No. such and such a car park is advised to go and clean their car immediately, as the Red Arrows have accidentally released dyed diesel over the area". Washing lines also got the same treatment. In addition, all flying operations ceased when they went up for their training.
They moved to RAF Scampton in 1983, but moved to RAF Cranwell when Scampton "closed" in 1995. They moved back to Scampton in 2000.
