"Yankee Jack", Harbour, Watchet, Somerset 26 March 2014

A statue dedicated to Watchet's "Yankee Jack". John Short, born in 1839 in Watchet, served on board a Yankee clipper ship during the American Civil War, becoming renowned for his melodious voice. Returning home at the age of 61, he brought with him his repertoire of sea shanties. These were collected and collated by Cecil Sharp and Sir Richard Terry for our English musical heritage. The statue was commissioned by the Market House Museum Society and executed by Alan B Herriot of Penicuik in Scotland. This sculptor also created the nearby statue of Coleridge's Ancient Mariner.
