Hercules, The Quarry, Shrewsbury 19 September 2018

A lead statue of Hercules on the bank of the Severn. It is an approximate copy of a statue by Glycon of Athens, known as the Farnese Hercules. Dating from the 18th Century, it is attributed to Jan van Nost the Elder. a Flemish sculptor who died in 1729. In 1851 he was positioned at the entrance to the quarry with his back to the town so as not to offend the gentlewomen. He was moved to his present position in 1881.
