St Mary's Priory Church, Monk Street, Abergavenny 9 November 2016

A memorial, bearing the arms of the Diocese of Monmouth, dedicated to the fallen in WW1 of members of St Mary's and Christ Church.

The Priory of St Mary was founded by the Normans in 1087, accommodating a prior and twelve monks brought from France. Little remains of the original priory but traces are believed to remain within the chancel. The main body of the church dates from the 14th Century when the tower and nave were added. Following the Reformation, most of the priory building was demolished. Further additions were made in the 16th, 17th and 19th Centuries. It is one of the largest parish churches in Wales and has several fine tombs and the remnants of a Jesse figure (see relevant photograph).
