An aide -memoire produced in 1978 explaining how soldiers could take measures to survive a nuclear blast. I suspect it was more to do with maintaining morale than providing practical help. Squaddie's humour stated that the best defence against a nuclear explosion was to bend forward, place your head between your legs and kiss your a**e goodbye. In the 1970s, for wartime, wrist worn dosimeters would have been issued to a percentage of soldiers in forward units. This we were assured, was in order that radiation, measured in rads (r) could be monitored and troops withdrawn before they accumulated an irreversible dose. The truth was, I was once told by someone who was in a position to know, was that units could be identified as having been incurably irradiated and therefore regarded as expendable for suicide missions. God, I loved the Cold War! (Well, it was better than a Hot War).
