Since St. Michael the Archangel is Co-patron of the entire temple (The official historical name of the rectory is Church of St. Peter and Paul and St. Michael the Archangel), this altar has always had a privileged position in the hierarchy of the church.
The altar comes from 17th century. Its creation and decoration were personally financed by the influential Bishop of Varmina Mikołaj Szyszkowski, who held office from 1633 to 1643. Bishop Szyszkowski was known as a great supporter of art and the re-Catholicization of the region after the Swedish wars.
The central motif is a Baroque oil painting depicting the triumphant Archangel Michael, the leader of the heavenly armies, in the fight against the devil.Connection to the exterior: The Cult of St. Michael is key for this church. If you look at the temple from the outside after visiting the interior, the monumental the figure of St. Michael the Archangel also adorns the very top of the 66-meter church tower.
