The limestone cliff originally housed an old Slavic fortification dating back to Great Moravia. It was first documented in an anonymous Hungarian chronicle as Castrum Blundus. King Béla IV of Hungary later ordered the wooden fort to be rebuilt in stone to fortify the borders against devastating regional invasions.
