Light Lottery

Low pressure systems are something else. Especially when you’re in the “donut hole” of one. To my north was intense clouds, to my south was less intense but plentiful clouds, the Bain signal bridge was in the most nail biting conditions out there - partly cloudy, with the clouds moving faster than this train.

The KCS SD70ACe leading the Roseport Coke train seeing here was in perfect light down the Milwaukee Sub, but getting it in the perfect light would require a lot of luck. The angle I originally wanted looked like it was going to happen at the last second. The cloud cleared up and a giant sun pocket lit up the entire train down to where I was standing... 10 seconds after the head end passed me.

With some cropping (albeit reduced quality), I was able to pull this off. Good enough
