If you look at this closely (and I hope you do..) you'll see that the soft plumage on the back of his head and neck has blown back and filled in the gap between his head and neck and his body - so that he is perfectly streamlined - not to mention the perfect leg position, right down to the pointed toes and tucked-in claws... He is flying into a strong head-wind, as you might be able to see from the way the reeds in background are swept toward him. That allowed him to sail easily to his perch without breaking form until the very last second..
It's a thing of beauty, I tell ya..
